Join Arcadia University in honor of Criminal Justice Month, Friday, March 29, 2013, for the viewing of one of the most important films of our time, “Broken on All Sides.” This award-winning documentary, about mass incarceration and racism in the criminal justice system in the United States, was described by former Black Panther Party leader Elaine Brown as a documentary “every conscious person in the world needs to see,” by writer Gladden Schrock as a “poignant present-tense call-to-arms,” and by public defender James E. Williams Jr. as “an excellent resource to use in educating, motivating, and empowering your group, organization, or community on this critical issue.” It includes interviews with Michelle Alexander (author of The New Jim Crow), people who were formerly incarcerated/convicted, politicians, academics, activists, and even a former correctional officer. It also features incredible drawings depicting prison life and societal inequities by Leonard Jefferson, who is incarcerated at SCI Albion in PA.

Here’s the film’s website, where you can get more information and see a preview: www.brokenonallsides.com

Watching and discussing this film will provide a unique opportunity to become educated around this issue, to agitate for more activism, and to make important connections with other groups working towards criminal justice reform. The 68-min movie will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, activist, and lawyer, Matt Pillischer; Amir Amma student and activist, with the Campaign to End the New Jim Crow (NY), who was formerly incarcerated for 2 decades under NY’s Rockefeller Drug Laws; and Dana Lomax-Williams, activist with the Human Rights Coalition and formerly incarcerated in PA, Josh Glenn, charged as an adult age 16 and now an activist with Youth Arts & Self-Empowerment Program and Decarcerate PA; Chrystal Pulle, high school junior and activist with Youth United for Change and Youth Advocate for Juvenile Law Center and more.

The event is free and will be held on the campus of Arcadia University, 450 S. Easton Road, Glenside, PA., in Murphy Hall’s Stiteler Auditorium. There will be a reception with the filmmaker and panelist from 5-5:30 PM and the film begins at 6PM with the panel following.
About Black Male Development Symposium: The BMDS was created in 2004 to address the life threatening issues facing Black males and their families. There is a sad and inescapable truth — Black males live at great risk and they and their families and communities must learn strategies of survival and empowerment. The Symposium provides a forum for practical solutions by providing informative presenters and interactive workshops to assist attendees in developing realistic strategies and concrete recommendations that they can put into practice in their respective communities. Additionally, the Symposium offers a safe “intergenerational space” for AAM of all ages to do as written and encouraged by the symposium’s early creators …to think and re-evaluate where they are as men, co-workers, lovers, husbands, fathers and brothers in a healthy and developmental manner (Madhubuti, 2004). The Symposium emerges as a fulcrum, more than a socio-political medium, but a social and intellectual forum where we can spread out the uncensored truth and challenges of the black male dilemma before a complex audience. BMDS hopes to continue positioning itself to become part of the growing body of knowledge and expertise about what works to combat this deeply rooted and exceeding complex national dilemma. (www.blackmaledevelopment.com)

2) Barber Shop Talk: Join an outstanding array of African American men, moderated by local radio personality E. Steven Collins (Radio One) as they talk about real issues and have real conversations in “Barber Shop Talk”. This will truly be an insightful discussion with accomplished men such as; talk show hosts, Bill Anderson (“Wake Up with Bill” – 900AM WURD), and Al Butler (“The Night Al Show” – 900AM WURD), along with business owner Bruce Burton (PrettyBoyz Barber Shop), activist Attorney Michael Coard, Esq. and Philadelphia’s Deputy Police Commissioner Rick Ross as they continue the discussion from the Fox29 “Black on Black” series.

Tickets $5.00 and can be purchased online through Eventbrite at: http://bmdsbarbaershoptalk512.eventbrite.com. The doors for this event will open at 1:45 PM. The discussion will begin at 2:15 PM in the Great Room of “the Commons” at Arcadia University.
